The Warning

In the city colours rule.
All day they flit and
Flow from place to place,
with purpose and distraction
As their undercurrents.
Then when darkness should reign
Twinkle light, which smiles but
Quietly soaks up the earth,
Shines down on the colours
And provides the music to
Which they dance.
And the colours all agree
There can be nothing better.
But they are wrong
For they are already fading.

And in the country
No lights smile.
Darkest night smothers the land.
And it is patient because
It has seen this before and
Knows what future days
Will bring.
