Trapped

There is a whole
kind of person
who has outlived
three score and ten.
Some by the merest chance,
others by the nuances of men.
When minds stay well
and bodies fall,
ideas are well
and truly trapped.
And the wisest folk,
the doctor men,
choose to leave it at that.
And because I am
so grateful
simply to be here
I don’t think it right and proper
to question what I fear.
My body is well cared for
by professionals at
their best.
But where am I
amongst this mix,
so desperate for a rest?
Should I stand and fight?
‘This is the way
it is supposed to be.’
Are you saying that for yourself
or are you saying
it for me?
